Preventive care involves a variety of different oral health treatments and methods designed to promote long-term oral health. Instead of addressing tooth problems when they appear, preventive care helps reduce the risk of these issues appearing in the first place.
At Smile Wellness Co., we take on a holistic approach to preventative dental care. That means we take into account your overall health and well-being to design an effective treatment plan, just for you.
The health of your teeth is essential to your long-term health and well-being. Problems with your bite, teeth, or mouth can directly affect your quality of life, from your nutrition to even your self-confidence. Preventive dental care allows you to stay on top of your dental needs and identify any problems with it in their beginning stages before they have time to create extensive damage.
With a holistic approach, we don’t consider oral health as completely separate from the rest of your body, or health needs. In order to formulate the right plan for you, we take an in-depth look at your medical history, medications, nutrition, home care routine, and products. When it comes to your in-office dental cleanings, we emphasize non-surgical periodontal treatment which includes modern, comfortable guided biofilm therapy via the use of Airflow Prophylaxis Master units as well as ozone gas insufflations.
It is important to brush your teeth at least twice a day for two minutes each session. Angle the bristles of the brush 45 degrees towards your gums. Brush in gentle, circular strokes, clean all surfaces of each tooth. Focus on cleaning each quadrant of your mouth for about 30 seconds to ensure you aren’t rushing. Electric toothbrushes are very helpful in removing plaque biofilm and often easier to master than manual toothbrushes. Dr. Su will discuss recommended oral hygiene products to use based on your individual needs.
Prophylactic cleanings are the routine dental care appointments generally done every 6 months to prevent gum disease and tooth decay from developing. Your dental hygienist will gently remove plaque, tartar, and bacteria from your teeth to ensure your smile is clean and free of debris. Periodontal cleanings, also known as “deep cleanings” or "scaling and root planing" may be necessary for patients who have periodontal disease. During these cleanings, your dental hygienist will take extra care to remove excessive calculus and bacterial deposits that have created a deep "pocket" between your teeth and gums. Periodontal disease has been associated with many systemic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, Alzheimer's, and cancer. Thus, scaling and root planing (SRP) is a vital therapy to control the spread of periodontal disease and prevent additional complications to your oral and systemic health.
