We're committed to elevating your smile and whole body health through clean, cutting-edge care. Dr. Su has received her certification by the IAOMT in the Safe Mercury Amalgam Removal Technique (SMART), a strict safety protocol designed to reduce your exposure to mercury vapor and particulate debris.
Dental amalgam is a liquid mercury and metal alloy mixture, with up to 50% mercury. Mercury is the most neurotoxic, non-radioactive element on our planet and the health and environmental effects are well documented. Contradictory to this, the American Dental Association (ADA) and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has mostly deemed mercury to be safe.
However, recent recommendations by the FDA in September 2020 have been revised to avoid use in the following patients: pregnant women or those planning to become pregnant, nursing women, children under 6, patients with pre-existing neurological disease, patients with impaired kidney function, patients with known, heightened sensitivity (allergy) to mercury or other components of dental amalgam.
At Smile Wellness Co., we recognize that patients often have an aversion to mercury in their mouths. Dr. Su understands your concerns and is here to help you achieve your health goals.
SMART protocol stands for "safe mercury amalgam removal technique". SMART protocol involves adhering to several safety measures to minimize exposure to mercury vapor and particulate matter:
SMART stands for Safe Mercury Amalgam Removal Technique. Dr. Su is SMART certified through the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology (IAOMT). Smile Wellness Co. uses the latest and most advanced techniques and equipment to ensure safety for you and our dental team.
Depending on the age and size of your silver mercury filling, Dr. Su may opt to replace it with a metal-free, composite (resin) tooth-colored filling. In some cases, if the amalgam was particularly large or it caused the tooth to crack, a crown may be a more stable alternative. Dr. Su will discuss your options, as well as the outcome to expect from each so that you can make an educated choice that works best for your dental health and lifestyle.
